Chicago Fall Mini Sessions: Frequently Asked Questions

Fall mini sessions are one of my favorite ways to photograph families, couples, and little ones during the prettiest part of the year. They’re quick, relaxed, and perfect if you’re hoping to update your family photos, get ahead on holiday cards, or just document this season of life without committing to a full session.

Here are answers to the questions I get most often before Chicago fall mini sessions. If you don’t see your question here, you can always reach out!

How long is a mini session?

Mini sessions are 20 minutes long. It goes by quickly, but it is plenty of time for a great variety of photos. We’ll make sure to get a mix of the whole family, the kids together, individual portraits, and a few parent or couple photos when it makes sense for your group.

How many photos will we receive?

You’ll receive a curated gallery of approximately 15–25 fully edited, high-resolution images. Your gallery will be delivered online, where you can download, share, and print your photos.

When will we receive our photos?

Mini session galleries are delivered within 2–3 weeks of your session date. I know many families are hoping to use their photos for holiday cards, so I work hard to have them back to you as quickly as possible while still giving each image the attention it deserves.

What should we wear for fall family photos?

The most important thing is that you feel like yourselves and that everyone is comfortable. Choose outfits that work together without being overly matchy. Coordinating colors, rather than putting everyone in the same color, usually photographs beautifully.

Patterns are absolutely welcome, but I recommend limiting them to one or two people in the group and mixing them with solids. Fall tones, neutrals, denim, soft textures, and layers tend to work especially well outside this time of year.

Before the session, make sure everyone has tried on their outfits. A great outfit can become distracting if someone is tugging at a too-tight waistband or constantly adjusting a strap. For little ones in dresses, bloomers over diapers or biker shorts underneath can be helpful.

What if my kids are shy, wild, or not in the mood for photos?

Honestly, that is very normal. You do not need to arrive with perfectly behaved children or worry about them looking at the camera for 20 straight minutes. I’ll guide you through the session and keep things moving, with room for kids to warm up and be themselves.

The best thing you can do is keep the pressure low. Let them know we’re going to hang out and take a few photos together, bring along a small non-messy bribe if needed, and trust that we’ll get the good stuff in between the wiggles.

Can we bring our dog?

Yes, dogs are welcome! Please let me know in your questionnaire so I can plan accordingly. I recommend bringing a leash, treats, and, if possible, having one adult ready to step in as the designated dog handler once we’ve gotten a few photos with them.

Can we book a mini session for extended family?

Mini sessions are designed for immediate families, couples, and small groups because the 20 minutes goes by quickly. If you’re hoping to include grandparents, cousins, or multiple households, please reach out before booking so we can make sure the session length and location are the right fit.

For extended family groups, a full session is often a better experience because it gives us enough time for the large group, each individual family, grandparents with grandchildren, sibling combinations, and any other important pairings.

Can we do a few photos of just the kids? What about just the parents?

Absolutely. I’ll plan to photograph the full group first, then move into kids together, individual kids, and a few photos of the grown-ups if time allows. If there is a specific combination that matters most to you, please include it in your questionnaire so I can prioritize it.

What happens if we’re running late?

Please plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so everyone can get settled, parking is not stressful, and we can start right on time. Mini sessions run back-to-back, so unfortunately I can’t extend your time if you arrive late. I’ll send the exact meeting spot and timing details before your session.

Where should we park?

Parking details will be included in your pre-session email, along with the exact meeting location. Chicago parking can be unpredictable, especially on weekends, so give yourself a little extra time to find a spot and walk over.

What if the weather is bad?

I keep a close eye on the forecast leading up to mini session day. If rain or unsafe weather is expected, I’ll be in touch with next steps. Depending on the forecast and schedule, that may mean shifting the session time, using a rain date, or finding another solution that makes sense for the group.

A little chill, wind, or cloud cover is usually completely fine, and some of the prettiest fall photos happen on an overcast day.

Can we bring props?

You’re welcome to bring one small, meaningful item if it feels personal to your family, but I generally recommend keeping things simple. The focus will be on you and your connection with each other. If you are thinking about bringing something specific, feel free to ask beforehand.

Can we order prints and holiday cards through the gallery?

Yes! Your gallery will include access to my professional print shop, where you can order prints, framed images, canvases, and more. You’ll also be able to download the high-resolution files and print them wherever you’d like.

Do you offer full family sessions, too?

I do! If you’d prefer more time, a more flexible location, or want a slower-paced experience with more variety, a full Chicago family photography session may be a better fit. Full sessions are about 90 minutes and are especially great for newborns, extended families, or anyone who wants more time to settle in and create something more personalized.

I can’t wait to photograph your family this fall!
